English
Overview
An elongated body and a thick dark lateral stripe distinguish Trigonostigma somphongsi from its broadly marked relatives. It has been exceptionally scarce, making maintenance of breeding groups particularly valuable. A dedicated aquarium is the most appropriate focus.
Distribution & habitat
It probably originates in western Thailand, with suggested records in the Mae Klong basin and Ratchaburi Province, but exact sites remain uncertain. Its natural habitat has not been firmly established. Other members of the genus inhabit shaded, gently flowing forest streams with dense plants, soft slightly acidic to neutral water, leaves, and wood. That comparison can guide an aquarium arrangement without becoming a confirmed habitat record for this fish.
Aquarium setup
Dark substrate, soft sand, dense plants, and wood provide a sheltered display. Floating growth helps soften the light. Leaf litter adds cover and supports microscopic organisms useful as supplementary fry food. Use plants that tolerate subdued illumination.
Diet & feeding
Small insects, worms, crustaceans, and other zooplankton probably form the wild diet. Suitable dry foods are generally accepted, with regular live or frozen bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia helping condition adults.
Behaviour & compatibility
Maintain a group when several individuals are available. A species aquarium supports the priority of captive reproduction. Its potential as a general community fish remains a favorable expectation rather than a well-established conclusion.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature females are noticeably larger and deeper-bodied, retaining a yellowish color. Settled males develop copper-orange tones.
Breeding
Captive reproduction has succeeded and is reportedly not especially difficult, though egg numbers are often small. Eggs attach to broad leaves or other surfaces without parental care. A planted mature tank may yield occasional fry. A dim separate setup with broad leaves or substitutes, soft acidic water, and a small sponge filter allows more control; mesh can protect fallen eggs. Bare tanks with a single artificial plant and adjusted reverse-osmosis water have also been used successfully.
Condition breeders with frequent small live and frozen meals. Once ready, a cooler change of roughly forty to fifty percent can precede introduction of one or two pairs that evening. Morning courtship may lead to inverted spawning beneath a leaf in several batches. Return unsuccessful pairs after three or four days and try others. Separate adults and eggs promptly. Hatching commonly takes one to two days, with free swimming around a week. Offer microscopic starter food before progressing to microworms and Artemia nauplii.
Notes
After a long period without records, three fish reached Germany among other small fishes in 2006. Breeding descendants were subsequently distributed among aquarists. Reintroduction requires better understanding of native sites and the causes of decline.
