English
Overview
Sahyadria chalakkudiensis resembles the familiar red-line torpedo barb, Sahyadria denisonii, but can be substantially more belligerent. It is unsuitable for a general community. A clear social hierarchy develops, making at least five specimens preferable to a token pair or trio.
Distribution & habitat
Records come from the Chalakudy, Periyar, Pamba, and Achankovil systems of Kerala, southern India. Its range is broader than the Chalakudy-only distribution first assumed.
Groups typically occupy rocky pools in middle river reaches, with dense bank vegetation and bottoms of sand, gravel, or bedrock.
Aquarium setup
Allow a footprint of at least about 120 × 45 cm. Rounded stones, sand, fine gravel, and wood can create a stream setting, but water quality matters more than the exact arrangement.
Organic pollution is poorly tolerated. Provide abundant oxygen, moderate circulation, and routine weekly changes of roughly 30–50%. Substantial filtration does not replace continuing water changes.
Diet & feeding
Wild food includes worms, insects, crustaceans, plants, and other organic material. In captivity, combine live or frozen bloodworms, Daphnia, and brine shrimp with quality dry preparations. Sinking offerings are preferable.
Carotenoid-rich food is said to enhance red pigmentation, but balanced feeding remains more useful than pursuing color alone.
Behaviour & compatibility
Potential belligerence favors robust, similarly sized companions with matching environmental needs. The group develops a pecking order. With only two or three fish, subordinate individuals may receive excessive harassment; maintain five or more.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult females tend to be slightly larger, heavier-bodied, and less colorful than males.
Breeding
Aquarium reproduction is unrecorded. Seasonal breeding like that of its relative is presumed, not a confirmed schedule for this species.
Notes
Compared with Sahyadria denisonii, it has a lower mouth position, a dark dorsal-fin mark, and a duller red body stripe ending at or before the dorsal origin. The relative's brighter stripe extends farther back.
Past trade confusion has even involved unrelated genera under this name. Examine mouth position, the dorsal fin, and stripe together rather than relying on a broadly similar red-line appearance.
