Overview

Puntius sharmai is a tiny, timid shoaling fish best suited to a species aquarium or carefully chosen diminutive companions. It is very peaceful, but a busy conventional community can be overwhelming. It is rarely encountered in the hobby outside India.

Distribution & habitat

Known localities are restricted to the vicinity of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, including Kunrathur, Chengalpet and Chembarambakkam Lake. It mainly inhabits freshwater ponds and lakes, many within urban areas affected by development and other human pressures. Chembarambakkam also faces pollution and invasive water hyacinth.

Aquarium setup

Use a footprint of at least approximately 60 × 30 cm, with dense plants. Floating cover and branching wood soften the light and supply shelter. Keep filtration gentle, since strong current may be difficult for this fish. Introduce it only to a biologically mature aquarium with stable water chemistry, rather than a new system subject to rapid fluctuations.

Diet & feeding

Its wild diet probably consists of minute insects, worms, crustaceans and other zooplankton. Appropriately sized dry foods are accepted, but supplement them daily with small live or frozen foods such as water fleas, Moina and brine shrimp.

Behaviour & compatibility

Maintain at least eight to ten together to reduce nervousness and encourage male courtship displays. Other very small, gentle shoaling fishes or suitable freshwater shrimps can be considered. Such companion suggestions should not be read as an absolute guarantee of safety for shrimp of every size.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females have distinctly rounder bellies, are often slightly larger and show less intense color. Males are comparatively lean and colorful.

Notes

Identification features include one pair of maxillary barbels, an elongate body, relatively long pectoral and anal fins, a dark side stripe ending at the tail-base blotch and a separate black spot above the front of the anal fin. Its generic placement still warrants investigation because of several unusual structural features.
