Overview
Most Pethia reval have red dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins, but Kalu River fish may be pale yellow. This small western Sri Lankan shoaler was once considered a red-finned form of a relative, so fin color alone does not establish identity.
Distribution & habitat
It is native to western Sri Lanka's Kelani, Maha Oya, and neighboring smaller drainages including the Attanagalu and Kalu. The northeastern Mahaweli population appears introduced, while possible natural hybridization with a relative has been suggested near the southern range limit.
Smaller tributaries are the presumed habitat rather than main channels, but precise details remain unconfirmed.
Aquarium setup
Dense plants and a dark substrate enhance appearance. Floating cover and roots provide shade and structure. Decoration is flexible, with modest filtration and some water movement; a stream-style arrangement can also work.
Diet & feeding
Algae, diatoms, debris, and small invertebrates are presumed wild foods. Feeding is straightforward in captivity. Combine good flakes or granules with regular small live or frozen bloodworms, water fleas, and Artemia, including some plant- or algae-enriched food.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is generally peaceful with appropriately matched small cyprinids, characins, livebearers, and suitable catfishes or loaches.
Keep six to ten or more. Grouping reduces nervousness and promotes natural behavior, with males developing stronger color around rivals.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult males are smaller, slimmer, and more vividly colored, particularly during reproduction.
Breeding
No practical aquarium breeding record is available.
Notes
Absent barbels, an incomplete lateral line, and dark bars behind the gill opening and above the rear of the anal base complement the usually red fins. Pale yellow fins in the Kalu population demonstrate why color alone cannot exclude identity.
Former treatment as a color form of Pethia cumingii makes combined assessment of morphology and locality preferable to a trade label or photograph of one bright male.
