概述
Pethia canius

Overview
Reddish Pethia canius has red dorsal and tail fins with an orange-yellow anal fin. Peaceful but timid, it suits calm, mature planted conditions. Similar body size alone does not make competitive feeders appropriate companions.
Distribution & habitat
Recent confirmed collections involve Cooch Behar and Nadia in West Bengal, India, while the full range remains unresolved. The older type locality referred broadly to northeastern Bengal ponds and ditches.
Ponds and other still or slow waters are typical habitats.
Aquarium setup
Dense planting, floating shade, and roots provide a suitable setting. Use gentle filtration rather than strong current.
Potential sensitivity to changing water chemistry makes mature stable accommodation important. Avoid unestablished systems.
Diet & feeding
Micropredation on tiny insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton is presumed rather than confirmed. Suitable dry preparations are accepted, with daily small live or frozen water fleas, Artemia, and similar foods supporting condition and color.
Behaviour & compatibility
A dedicated group or other miniature peaceful fish and suitable freshwater shrimp makes a better arrangement than a broad community. Timidity and small size remain constraints despite peaceful behavior.
Maintain at least eight to ten. A proper group reduces nervousness and allows natural interactions, including stronger male display colors during competition for mates.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature females are rounder-bellied, usually somewhat larger, and less intensely colored.
Breeding
The genus's general egg-scattering method, without parental care, can guide an attempt but is not a fully confirmed sequence for this species. Occasional fry may appear in mature aquariums. A separate dim setup with mesh, artificial grass, marbles, fine plants, or mops can improve egg survival.
Use mature slightly acidic to neutral water toward the upper end of the suitable temperature range and gentle air-driven circulation. Introduce one or two conditioned pairs; spawning may follow the next morning. Larger accommodation can instead hold about six of each sex. Remove adults when eggs appear.
Generic accounts describe hatching in about 24–36 hours and free swimming after three or four days. Start with infusoria-grade food, then progress to microworms and Artemia nauplii as mouth size permits.
Notes
Long treated as synonymous with Pethia gelius, its identity was clarified and a neotype designated in 2013. A reddish body, red dorsal and tail fins, and orange-yellow anal fin contrast with the yellower appearance of similar species. The broad tail-base band and three diffuse body blotches should also be examined rather than relying on one color patch.
