Overview
The Philippine Nematabramis alestes has a pronounced keel along the belly. Its barbels are shorter than the head, unlike those of other members of the genus, providing a useful recognition clue.
Distribution & habitat
Records include Basilan, Mindanao, Palawan, and Busuanga in the southern Philippines. Other nearby islands may also support it. The type locality is Zamboanga in western Mindanao.
Members of the genus occupy habitats ranging from fast tributary streams to pools, lakes, and disturbed swamps. Those broad records do not establish a single preferred environment for this species.
Notes
Fin-ray counts help separate species alongside barbel length and the abdominal keel. Assess the combined anatomy rather than a local name or general silvery appearance.
