概述

Laubuka fasciata

Overview

Laubuka fasciata is a small cyprinid endemic to Kerala, India, with a dark stripe linking the eye and tail base. It schools and jumps effectively. Small body size does not remove the need for swimming space or a tightly secured cover.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs in several Kerala river systems in southwestern India, including the Periyar and Chalakkudy. Typical sites lie along shallow, slow-moving margins of middle and lower river or stream reaches, over rock and gravel.

Aquarium setup

Provide a footprint of at least approximately 120 × 30 cm. Mixed rocks, gravel, rounded boulders, and branches can create a flowing-water setting. Hardy attached plants can be fixed to the structure without occupying the open swimming area.

Organic waste buildup is poorly tolerated, making consistently clean water essential. A closely fitted cover is a practical necessity for jump prevention.

Diet & feeding

It naturally takes terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates at the surface. Appropriately sized dry food is accepted in captivity, but regularly include live or frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms for variety.

Behaviour & compatibility

It is nonaggressive and can share accommodation with suitable fishes that match its conditions and temperament. Membership of a broad fish group alone is not evidence of compatibility.

Maintain at least eight to ten together. A group reduces nervousness and encourages natural swimming, so plan the enclosure around the whole group rather than one small fish.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females are distinctly deeper-bodied and generally a little larger than males.

Notes

The dark eye-to-tail stripe, scattered lower-jaw tubercles, and elongated pelvic fins aid recognition. Older records may use Laubuca fasciata or Chela fasciata. Check name relationships rather than treating a different spelling or genus as a separate species.
