Overview
The two distinct dark spots of Labiobarbus ocellatus, one near the shoulder and another at the tail base, contrast with its unstriped body. This occasionally imported social fish needs a spacious adult group setup.
Distribution & habitat
Native records include Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. It uses open water in rivers and some lakes, moving into flooded land and forest during the wet season.
Aquarium setup
Combine open swimming room with rockwork and limited branches. Hardy attached plants can be included. Lighting encourages surface growth, while filtration and circulation maintain clean, oxygen-rich conditions without accumulated waste.
Diet & feeding
Grazing incorporates both algae and tiny animals. Supplement prepared food with invertebrate meals and vegetable matter. Softened vegetables or mixed gel food provide useful variety rather than relying solely on aquarium algae.
Behaviour & compatibility
Keep at least six where the enclosure permits a proper group. Comparable peaceful river fishes are potential companions. Adequate social company reduces nervous behavior and supports a more natural display.
Sexual dimorphism
A deeper-bodied mature female is expected, but this difference has not been firmly verified.
Notes
The tail is relatively uniform or nearly clear, without sharply defined dark lobe margins. Invalid trade names are possible, so assess the paired body spots and fin pattern together.
