Overview

The peaceful Inlecypris auropurpurea is a social fish from the Inle watershed. It can lose out to larger or forceful companions and is especially capable of jumping. A secure cover and reassuring vegetation are both central to its care.

Distribution & habitat

Known distribution is restricted to Inle Lake and surrounding waters in eastern Myanmar's Shan State. Much of the lake is shallow and clear, although the edges can be muddy. Dense aquatic growth and root tangles beneath floating vegetation shelter fish.

Sediment, nutrient enrichment, pollution from agriculture, and introduced fishes have placed pressure on this habitat.

Aquarium setup

Dense planting with some floating cover provides a suitable setting. Strong current is unnecessary. Fit the lid carefully, including openings around equipment, because this species escapes by jumping readily.

Diet & feeding

Wild observations describe evening capture of surface insects and daytime feeding on larvae and worms near the bottom. Insects and other aquatic invertebrates dominate the diet. Captive fish usually accept prepared food; supplement a quality staple regularly with small live or frozen items.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep eight to ten or more. Suitable peaceful companions can share the tank, but large or boisterous fishes may overwhelm it. Floating plants and other gentle open-water fishes can help reduce nervous behavior.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females tend to be larger, heavier in build, and less intensely colored than males.

Breeding

Eggs are scattered among vegetation without parental care. Occasional young may survive in a mature planted aquarium. For greater output, prepare a separate enclosure with aged water, fine plants or mops, or a barrier that lets eggs fall beyond adult reach. Use gentle sponge filtration or aeration.

Slightly acidic to neutral water near the warmer end of the normal range is suitable. Introduce one or two conditioned pairs; spawning may occur within a day, and adults should remain no longer than two days. Eggs generally hatch in about two to two and a half days, with swimming beginning several days later. Start with infusoria before progressing to nauplii, microworms, and finely powdered preparations.
