贝尔氏野鲮

Overview

Juveniles of Incisilabeo behri are occasionally sold, but this large river fish is clearly inappropriate for an ordinary home aquarium. A conspicuous transverse notch across the head and forward-bulging forehead distinguish its appearance.

Distribution & habitat

The native range follows the Mekong through southern China, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. A possible Chao Phraya occurrence remains questionable. Main channels and substantial deep tributaries with rocky beds provide habitat, where it joins other large benthic fishes.

At the start of the rains it moves upstream through the Sekong, Sesan, and Srepok systems, returning downstream during the dry season. Separate movements may involve young fish seeking feeding grounds and adults traveling to reproduce.

Aquarium setup

Only public exhibits or exceptionally large specialist private systems can accommodate it appropriately. Substantial mature filtration, oxygen-rich water, circulation, and rigorous maintenance are essential. Aquarium recommendations include weekly replacement of roughly half to seven-tenths of the water.

Diet & feeding

Specialized mouthparts scrape algae and associated organisms from rocks and other solid surfaces. This grazing behavior does not make such a large fish an appropriate algae-control animal for a small tank.

Behaviour & compatibility

Restricted space can provoke aggression. Natural groups alongside other large bottom-dwelling fishes occur under very different spatial conditions from a cramped aquarium.

Notes

The yellowish to orange-brown head contrasts with the grayish body. The head notch and frontal projection are useful recognition features. Older accounts may place this species in another genus.
