Hypsibarbus salweenensis

Overview

Hypsibarbus salweenensis is a large cyprinid of the Salween system, ranging across Yunnan in China, eastern Myanmar, and northwestern Thailand. Seasonal concentrations downstream suggest a mobile lifestyle rather than permanent confinement to one small stream.

Distribution & habitat

It is endemic to the Salween drainage, known as the Nu River in its Chinese reaches. Collections include submontane headwaters, substantial tributaries, and the main channel. The type record comes from a Salween reach in Thailand's Mae Hong Son province.

Seasonal abundance in the lower river suggests migration, but does not establish a specific route or breeding schedule.

Notes

Relatively long paired barbels, together with gill-raker and scale counts, help separate it from similar fishes. A generalized silver-cyprinid appearance is insufficient identification.

Members of the genus often have dark scale edges producing a net-like pattern, a strongly serrated dorsal spine, and sometimes brightly colored pelvic or anal fins. These group characters need to be considered alongside this species' range and finer details.
