Overview
An extended snout characterizes Hemibarbus longirostris, an eastern Asian river cyprinid. Adults commonly gather close to the bottom. Their use of quiet near-bed areas is an important qualification to the broader description of a running-water fish.
Distribution & habitat
The native distribution includes northeastern China, southeastern Russia, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan. The type locality is in South Korea. Clear, well-oxygenated rivers with sand, gravel, rocks, or mud provide habitat. Within these rivers, adults tend to group immediately above the bed in slower reaches.
Diet & feeding
Wild feeding records include benthic crustaceans, insects, mollusks, and other large invertebrates. These records describe an animal-based bottom-feeding diet.
