Gymnostomus lobatus

Overview

Gymnostomus lobatus is a relatively slender silver cyprinid with an often prominent projecting snout and no dark tail-base marking. Its association with the Mekong's seasonal mass migrations is a major feature of its biology. A plain silver appearance alone is insufficient to distinguish it from other small cyprinids.

Distribution & habitat

Its range includes the middle and lower Mekong region and Thailand's Chao Phraya and Mae Klong systems. The type collection came from the Kok River near Chiang Rai.

It forms an abundant component of large cyprinid movements in the Mekong main channel during December–February and May–July. Outside those migrations, records cover rivers and streams of varied size, with currents ranging from slow to rapid. Fish also enter inundated forest during the wet season.

Seasonal movement and use of flooded habitats distinguish this pattern from permanent occupation of one small stream. Flow at a single collection point should not define its entire environment.

Notes

The slender outline, strongly projecting snout, silver flanks, and unmarked caudal peduncle are useful recognition clues; scale counts also help separate related species.

Older records may use Henicorhynchus lobatus. Generic placement has differed among treatments, so compare the species name and synonym relationships when tracing records rather than assuming an older genus indicates a different fish.
