Overview
A close association with fast streams defines Garra borneensis. Its modified lower lip provides attachment to submerged surfaces, an adaptation relevant to the clear, strongly oxygenated waters it occupies.
Distribution & habitat
Records cover northern and western Borneo across Indonesian, Bruneian and Malaysian territory. Riffles and flowing headwaters are typical, with a possible preference for shallow zones. Gravel, rock and bedrock support rich films of algae and microorganisms in clear oxygen-rich water.
Notes
Bornean origin is a useful identification clue because it is the documented representative of the genus on the island. Relationships within the wider group remain complex; shared appearance alone does not establish identical requirements among species.
