长身长须 · Mekong Flying Barb

Overview

Large pectoral fins and elongated barbels characterize Esomus longimanus. Although associated with shallow quiet habitats, it is an effective jumper. Stable established water, shelter and a well-secured aquarium are central to its care.

Distribution & habitat

Records include the Mekong and Tonle Sap systems and smaller coastal drainages in southeastern Thailand. Malaysian records probably involve other species. Ditches, marshes and flooded fields with thick vegetation provide its characteristic shallow habitat.

Aquarium setup

Provide adequate length with floating cover and branches to soften the light. A powerful current is unnecessary. Establish filtration before stocking and avoid abrupt chemistry changes. Pay attention to gaps around equipment as well as the main lid, since small openings can permit escape.

Diet & feeding

Offer fine prepared foods supplemented with regular invertebrate meals. The natural diet includes both terrestrial and aquatic animals, so water fleas, brine shrimp and bloodworms are useful captive options.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males usually have a slimmer build and a slightly smaller size than females.

Notes

Aquarium observations of this genus include an unresolved wasting problem, often first apparent behind the gills. Rapid loss of condition is the reported symptom, rather than a confirmed diagnosis with an established treatment.
