Overview

A relatively familiar aquarium fish, Devario devario is an energetic shoaling species with a single interrupted pale stripe on each side. Short-bodied and albino stock represent selected forms rather than automatically indicating distinct wild species.

Distribution & habitat

Its core range comprises the Ganges and Brahmaputra systems of northern India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Records include moderately flowing streams and still water above a small dam, with bottoms of mud, sand and stones. Some southern Indian occurrences require confirmation. Natural water conditions vary with season.

Aquarium setup

Reserve ample swimming space within a layout of gravel, sand, smooth stones and wood. Tough plants can be attached to the decorations. Keep oxygen levels high, circulation moderate and organic pollution low. Weekly replacement of approximately a third to half of the water is suggested, together with a tightly closed cover against jumping.

Diet & feeding

This is a broad generalist: aquatic and terrestrial insects accompany substantial filamentous algae and diatoms, with other small animals and debris also used. Captive fish accept a wide menu. Complement good dry food with regular small live or frozen meals.

Behaviour & compatibility

Normally nonaggressive, it can still unsettle timid or slow fish through persistent activity and competitive feeding. Choose robust partners of comparable size and matching needs. A shoal of eight to ten or more helps reduce nervousness and supports natural displays between males.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females usually have fuller bellies, slightly greater size and weaker coloration. Males become more colorful around rivals.

Breeding

General methods for egg-scattering devarios offer a useful approach. Provide a separate dim tank with mature water, gentle aeration and mesh or fine plants to shelter eggs. Condition the adults first, introduce pairs and remove them after spawning. Removal after about two days also limits egg predation if no spawning was noticed. Fry require microscopic starter foods before progressing to microworms, newly hatched brine shrimp and fine dry powders.

Notes

The absence of maxillary barbels and the single broken pale side stripe aid recognition. Some short-bodied aquarium forms carry labels resembling an unidentified species name, making an identity check worthwhile.
