Overview

A pale whitish base color and usually eight branched anal rays help separate Desmopuntius endecanalis from its relatives. Its assignment to the genus was tentative, so resemblance to other barred barbs should not be taken as proof of identity.

Distribution & habitat

Available records suggest a restricted range in the Kapuas basin of western Indonesian Borneo, including the Sentarum lakes. Its precise habitat has not been confirmed. Related species use peat swamps, blackwater streams, and vegetated still waters, but those associations should remain a comparison rather than verified field information for this fish.

Aquarium setup

A densely planted layout or shaded forest-stream arrangement is suggested. Soft substrate, branches, wood, and leaf litter provide cover under subdued lighting. Suitable ferns, mosses, and crypts can be included. Filtration need not create forceful current; leave calm areas available.

Diet & feeding

Small insects, worms, crustaceans, and other zooplankton are considered probable prey. Appropriately sized dry food is accepted, but should be supplemented rather than used alone. Daily small frozen or live meals can support coloration and reproductive conditioning.

Behaviour & compatibility

A group numbering eight to ten or more should show better confidence and male displays. Similar-sized peaceful Southeast Asian fishes, including suitable cyprinids and loaches, offer possible companions. Avoid very vigorous feeders that could take most of the food before this fish can feed.

Sexual dimorphism

Sex differences remain unconfirmed. A mature female may be slightly larger and rounder, especially while carrying eggs, but this expectation is not a validated identification method.
