Overview

A spotted anal fin is a useful identification clue for Danio nigrofasciatus. Small and exceptionally gentle, it is also shy enough that a conventional busy community may be unsuitable. A dedicated group or carefully chosen miniature companions allows it to behave more confidently.

Distribution & habitat

This Myanmar endemic is associated with central regions around Yangon, Bago, and Mon State, on both sides of the Bago Yoma. Streams and minor rivers share its range with ponds, ditches, and rice fields. Seasonal monsoons change many of these habitats markedly, with falling water during dry months and stronger flow during the rains.

Aquarium setup

Dense vegetation and dark substrate provide shelter and show the fish to advantage. Rounded stones, gravel, wood, and attached plants also work in a stream-inspired layout. Keep circulation moderate, leaving quiet swimming areas. Escape prevention matters even for such small fish: fit the lid closely around all equipment.

Diet & feeding

Insects and their larvae are thought very likely to supply most natural food. Offer one or two suitable small dry preparations together with regular live or frozen additions. Variety supports condition and color even though the fish readily accepts prepared food.

Behaviour & compatibility

Maintain eight to ten or more together. Social contact reduces nervousness and encourages male displays. Choose tankmates of similarly modest size with compatible needs; larger or more assertive fish can make an otherwise peaceful aquarium unsuitable.

Sexual dimorphism

Females generally become slightly larger and fuller-bellied, with less intense color. These differences strengthen before spawning as females develop eggs and males brighten.

Breeding

This egg-scattering fish does not guard its offspring. A female commonly releases only about twenty to fifty eggs in one event, fewer than many relatives. Prepare a dim breeding enclosure with fine vegetation, mats, or mesh to keep eggs beyond adult reach. Slightly acidic or neutral water near the warmer end of its maintenance range is appropriate.

Introduce one or two conditioned pairs and use gradual additions of cooler water with small live-food meals to encourage spawning. Remove the adults afterward because they eat eggs. Established sponge filtration protects the fry. Eggs usually hatch within a day to a day and a half; free swimming follows after several more days. Begin with infusoria or very fine starter food before introducing nauplii and microworms.
