概述

Danio meghalayensis

Overview

An energetic shoaling fish, Danio meghalayensis needs cool water and generous swimming space. Its activity can overwhelm timid companions, and breeding has proved less straightforward than for many familiar danios.

Distribution & habitat

Known from the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, northeastern India, it was described from fish collected near Umiam Lake. It generally occupies upland streams over rocky beds with boulders and few aquatic plants, although slower, shaded sites also occur.

Aquarium setup

Use dark substrate and plants, or a stream layout of gravel, smooth rocks, and wood. Circulation should leave quieter retreats. Cover the aquarium securely. Avoid prolonged warmth; during warmer periods, maintain suitable temperatures, strengthen aeration, and adjust food to activity and appetite.

Diet & feeding

Insects and larvae are thought to be important wild foods. Captive fish usually accept dry diets readily, supplemented with live or frozen bloodworms, Daphnia, Artemia, and comparable items. Live food is useful when conditioning breeders.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep eight to ten or more to promote confidence and direct hierarchy-related interactions within the group. Robust, similarly sized companions that share its cooler requirements are preferable to slow or shy feeders.

Sexual dimorphism

Males are smaller and slimmer, with brighter overall color and more red in the fins.

Breeding

It scatters eggs without caring for the brood, but standard pair-based methods can fail; a larger female may relentlessly chase her partner. One successful account involved eight adults conditioned on live foods. They spawned during a thunderstorm, choosing coarse gravel despite available moss, with females leading and males following.

Adults were removed afterward. Young appeared around 48 hours later and swam freely after another approximately 48 hours. Artemia nauplii and prepared fry foods supported rapid growth to about 12–15 mm within a month. This specific experience offers a starting point rather than a guaranteed trigger or protocol.
