Overview

Pearl-like spots and blue flanks give male Danio margaritatus a striking appearance, enhanced by red-and-black fin markings. Its small size conceals a combination of shyness and persistent male rivalry, making cover and adequate space essential.

Distribution & habitat

Initially found near Hopong in eastern Myanmar, it is also recorded through southern Shan’s Salween-associated waters and into northern Thailand. Typical sites are shallow, clear wetlands with dense aquatic plants, often surrounded by open grassland; the original site formed behind an agricultural spring impoundment.

Aquarium setup

Use abundant plants, dark substrate, and floating cover to interrupt sightlines. Gentle established sponge filtration is sufficient. Avoid turning the aquarium into a tannin-rich blackwater setup with wood and leaf litter, which does not resemble its characteristic habitat.

Diet & feeding

Tiny invertebrates, algae, and zooplankton are considered likely wild foods. Offer small dry foods alongside live or frozen items, keeping food accessible below the surface. Newly imported fish in poor condition often benefit from live food before accepting alternatives reliably.

Behaviour & compatibility

Large or vigorous feeders can intimidate it. Small peaceful surface fish may encourage bolder behavior. Around twenty or more helps distribute male competition, though this is a loose shoal rather than a constantly synchronized school. Daytime sparring can damage fins within the group, usually without affecting other species. Keep breeding groups free of close relatives because hybridization is possible.

Sexual dimorphism

Males have stronger blue body color and red-and-black fin bands, with a reddish abdomen when courting. Females are rounder, blue-green, and more weakly colored; pelvic fins lack the male pattern. A small dark mark near the vent can appear in spawning condition.

Breeding

Captive breeding is established. Condition adults and use a pair or a small group with fine plants or mops in aged water. Additional adults increase egg predation and interference between males. A typical event produces roughly thirty slightly adhesive eggs. Remove breeders afterward and allow females recovery time between spawnings.

Hatching generally takes about 72 hours, followed by free swimming three or four days later. Start fry with infusoria-sized food and advance to Artemia nauplii or microworms as their mouths allow.

Notes

When selecting captive-bred stock, inspect body shape and fin patterns as well as color. Deformities and unusual blotchy fins occur in trade fish, while some female-like forms remain uncertain in identity.
