概述

Danio kyathit

Overview

The active, peaceful Danio kyathit has orange-red fins and variable flank markings. Some fish have continuous stripes, while others show wavy lines or spots. Genetic differences among forms make identification more complicated than a shared trade appearance suggests.

Distribution & habitat

Its range includes upper Ayeyarwaddy tributaries in northern Myanmar, from Kachin into Sagaing and Chin. The type site was a shaded stream bordered by dense bamboo, with clear but slightly brownish flowing water over mud and stones.

Aquarium setup

Provide a long open swimming area among dark substrate and substantial planting. Rounded stones, gravel, wood, and attached plants can create a stream arrangement. Moderate circulation with protected retreats is preferable to strong flow throughout, and all cover gaps need sealing.

Diet & feeding

Insects and larvae are considered likely natural foods. Aquarium specimens usually feed readily on small dry diets, with regular live or frozen foods adding variety and supporting color.

Behaviour & compatibility

Maintain at least eight to ten for confidence and natural male displays. Peaceful companions should share its size, temperature, and water requirements. General adaptability is not a reason to disregard its preference for soft water.

Sexual dimorphism

Females are usually somewhat larger and fuller, with slightly weaker color. Differences become more obvious in breeding condition.

Breeding

Eggs are scattered without parental care; a mature planted aquarium may occasionally produce a few surviving fry. For better yields, condition adults and move one or two ready pairs to a separate tank with fine plants, mops, or mesh that protects eggs. Small cooler-water additions or an evening water change may stimulate spawning.

Remove adults when eggs are seen, and use established sponge filtration. Hatching commonly takes about 24–36 hours, followed by free swimming several days later. Artemia nauplii or similarly sized food can then be offered.

Notes

Both spotted and striped fish have circulated under this name, with genetic work indicating differences between them. Other red-finned trade forms also have unresolved identities. Retaining provenance and purchase labels is more useful than identifying fish from fin color alone.
