Overview

A dark flank stripe combined with red areas in the dorsal and tail fins makes Cyclocheilichthys janthochir recognizable among its relatives. Occasional specialist imports come from Kalimantan. Its appeal is best realized in a roomy, mature aquarium that accommodates an entire group.

Distribution & habitat

This Bornean endemic is recorded in western and central Indonesian Kalimantan. Its streams and rivers are linked to forest peat swamps, where decaying vegetation colors the water and canopy cover limits light. Fallen branches and leaves cover the bed, and the water is characteristically soft and acidic. Conversion of these forests threatens the habitat.

Aquarium setup

Retain ample unobstructed swimming room while furnishing the aquarium with wood and shaded retreats. Dim lighting, leaf litter, and tannin-stained water suit a peat-swamp presentation and can enhance coloration. Suitable ferns, mosses, and crypts may be used if their needs can be met.

Water quality takes priority over the display style. Accumulating organic waste is poorly tolerated, so use established filtration and avoid introducing the fish to a newly set-up aquarium.

Diet & feeding

Examination of wild stomach contents shows a diet dominated by invertebrates, particularly insects from both land and water. Prepared food is readily accepted, but regular frozen or live additions help maintain condition and color. Larger individuals have also shown enthusiasm for chopped shrimp.

Behaviour & compatibility

A peaceful group can fit a large community, although its size may unsettle hesitant or slow companions. Maintain six or more so that social contact reduces nervousness. Select partners with compatible environmental needs rather than assuming every large community fish will suit soft, acidic water.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females may be heavier in build and perhaps less intensely colored. These are proposed tendencies, not secure diagnostic characters.
