Overview
The unusually deep body of Chela cachius makes it distinctive among its relatives. Constant movement and enthusiastic feeding are more relevant to community selection than aggression: quieter companions can be overwhelmed even by a nonaggressive group.
Distribution & habitat
Most records come from the Ganges and Brahmaputra systems in India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Wider reports include Pakistan and Myanmar, although the latter may be mistaken. The fish uses diverse habitats, from rivers and streams to ponds, canals, ditches and other standing waters.
Aquarium setup
Allow substantial swimming room, then add plants and a dark substrate to enhance presentation. Floating growth or branches can provide dappled shade. Some circulation is appreciated, but a strongly driven river tank is unnecessary. Close-fitting cover is essential for this accomplished jumper.
Diet & feeding
Wild feeding probably centers on aquatic invertebrates. Aquarium specimens are generally accommodating feeders. Combine good prepared foods with small live or frozen prey rather than relying on one food type.
Behaviour & compatibility
Eight to ten or more create a confident social group. Robust fishes of similar size are better partners than slow, timid species. Research each proposed companion’s feeding pace and environmental needs rather than assuming all peaceful fishes will fit.
