概述

Barilius malabaricus

Overview

Blue-green rounded flank spots and broad orange borders on the dorsal and anal fins characterize Barilius malabaricus. This southwestern Indian fish is a rapid swimmer and energetic feeder that needs open space and stable, clean water.

Distribution & habitat

Certain records come from Kerala's Payaswini and Vallapattanam systems. A wider range across northern Kerala and southern Karnataka is considered possible.

The proposed habitat consists of well-oxygenated streams and rivers with moderate to fast current over gravel, boulders, and exposed rock. This ecological description remains probable rather than fully established.

Aquarium setup

Allow at least a 150 by 60 cm footprint. Build a river-style setting from sand, gravel, differently sized stones, and roots while preserving long swimming lanes. Hardy attached plants may be secured to the decor.

Maintain established biological filtration, good oxygenation, and freedom from accumulated organic waste. Weekly changes of 30–50% are recommended. An immature aquarium is unsuitable, and the cover must fit securely to prevent escapes.

Diet & feeding

Insect capture at the surface is described for the genus as a whole. In captivity, supplement good dry foods with live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, chopped earthworms, and comparable items. Fruit flies or small crickets should be well fed before being offered.

Behaviour & compatibility

Ordinary small community arrangements are unsuitable. Slow or timid fish can lose out at feeding time, and very small tankmates risk predation. Select sturdy, similarly sized companions suited to flowing water.

Keep a minimum of five conspecifics. A hierarchy develops, with tiny groups exposing weaker fish to concentrated harassment; solitary fish may instead challenge similar-looking neighbors.

Sexual dimorphism

Adult females generally have less vivid color and become slightly larger and thicker than males, especially when carrying eggs.

Notes

Before its revalidation, this fish circulated under other congeneric names or orange-fin trade labels. Flank spot shape helps distinguish it, but an old sales name is insufficient for identification. Captive breeding details remain unreported.
