'Barbus' guirali · African Blackfin Barb

Overview

An active river cyprinid from Cameroon and Gabon, 'Barbus' guirali benefits from spacious group housing. Trade identification deserves care because apparently different fish have been imported under the same name.

Distribution & habitat

Cameroonian records mainly concern southern and western drainages, including the Ntem, Nyong, Dja, and Sanaga, with some central localities. In Gabon it occupies the Ogooué and major tributaries such as the Ngouné and Ivindo. Rivers are the primary habitat, though feeder streams and tributaries are also used.

Aquarium setup

Provide at least a 150 by 45 cm footprint. Clean, oxygen-rich water and some current are important. Good lighting over a darker bottom, smooth rocks, roots, and living plants encourages coloration. Very sparse furnishings can leave the fish looking washed out.

Diet & feeding

Most offered aquarium foods are accepted eagerly. Quality flakes or granules can be combined with regular small live or frozen bloodworms, water fleas, and brine shrimp. Captive acceptance alone does not define the complete natural diet.

Behaviour & compatibility

Peaceful companions of comparable size should be confident enough to cope with an active neighbor and too large to be considered prey. A group of at least eight to ten reduces nervousness and concentrates social activity within the hierarchy.

A favorable report of one isolated individual does not replace planning for the species' normal schooling behavior or the space a full group needs.

Sexual dimorphism

Males are expected to be brighter, slimmer, and slightly smaller than females. Treat these as proposed tendencies rather than fully established external sexing criteria.

Notes

Captive information remains limited, and mistaken sales identities have been reported. Appearance and reliable provenance should be considered together. Breeding procedures for other cyprinids are comparisons, not a confirmed method for this species.
