Overview

Juvenile Barbonymus schwanefeldii can look deceptively manageable in a shop. Adult size and the need for a group make long-term housing demanding, and selected golden or other color forms require just as much space.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs widely through mainland Southeast Asia, Borneo and Sumatra, including major systems such as the Mekong and Chao Phraya. The original Singapore population was thought lost, with later occurrences apparently involving feral introductions. Seasonally flooded rivers and adjacent plains are typical, while canals and artificial lakes are also used. Rising water allows feeding and reproduction in flooded vegetation; fish retreat to channels as flooding subsides.

Aquarium setup

Reserve generous open swimming space and install substantial established filtration. Water quality, oxygen availability and circulation outweigh decorative choices. Frightened fish can jump forcefully, making a secure, close-fitting heavy lid essential.

Diet & feeding

This opportunistic omnivore may derive much of its food from plants. Combine quality prepared products with measured live or frozen meals and plentiful plant material. Peeled peas, softened zucchini, spinach and chopped fruit are suitable additions. Large fish will also take chopped worms, shrimp and mussel; avoid feeding beyond their needs simply because they continue to accept food.

Behaviour & compatibility

It is not usually aggressive, but small fishes can be swallowed. Its activity and feeding strength can also unsettle slow or timid companions. Tankmates should be robust, comparable in size and compatible with the same conditions, in a very large aquarium.

Maintain a group of six or more. Inadequate numbers can produce nervous or aggressive behavior, whereas a proper shoal offers more natural interaction. Plan accommodation for the entire adult group before obtaining juveniles.

Sexual dimorphism

Females normally have a deeper body once mature, most noticeably while carrying eggs. Other external differences are subtle.

Breeding

Thousands of eggs may be released by a female, with no subsequent parental care. Hormone-assisted breeding is used in aquaculture, while successful private-aquarium reproduction is not clearly documented. Any attempt needs extensive space, protection from parental egg eating and a realistic capacity to rear and house numerous offspring.

Notes

Natural fish bear a black stripe along each tail lobe, unlike Barbonymus altus. Brightly colored stock may represent selected strains or artificial dyeing; dyed coloration should not be mistaken for a natural pattern or stable breeding trait. Identity, origin and eventual housing requirements deserve attention at purchase.
