Overview

Acrossocheilus parallens carries five or six dark flank bars, each approximately two scales across. Since several related species show much the same pattern, the number of bars should be treated as one identification clue rather than a complete diagnosis.

Distribution & habitat

Records come from Guangdong, Hainan and Taiwan. Most Hainan records concern the island itself; the type locality was recorded in Guangdong.

Diet & feeding

Wild fish combine feeding on small bottom-associated invertebrates with grazing over stones and other firm objects. Attached biofilms are therefore used alongside animal prey.

Notes

A downward-directed mouth with fleshy lips, a gap at the center of the lower lip and two pairs of barbels are characteristic features of the genus. They offer useful additional context when examining a barred specimen.
