Overview

The many geographical forms of Tropheus moorii offer striking variety, but successful care involves more than choosing a color. Clean water, predominantly plant-based feeding, and a stable social group are central to keeping a fish that is prone to bloat and unsuitable for beginners.

Distribution & habitat

Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, it lives in shallow water along rocky shores.

Aquarium setup

Provide sand and strong oxygenation. Some keepers minimize decor to discourage territories; others use numerous rocky hiding places separated by swimming areas. A single specimen may use a tank around 120 × 30 × 30 cm, whereas a colony needs at least approximately 152 × 46 × 46 cm. Consistently good water quality matters more than choosing one furnishing method.

Diet & feeding

Spirulina flakes, blanched spinach, nori, and similar plant foods should supply most of the diet. Small live or frozen portions can supplement them. Beefheart and other terrestrial animal meat are inappropriate because they interfere with digestion.

Behaviour & compatibility

It is relatively tolerant of other species, but its activity can unsettle shy tankmates. Colony management in the genus depends on establishing a hierarchy. Groups of roughly 15–20 are commonly used to spread aggression, while small groups may fight persistently or fatally. Avoid adding new fish to an established colony. Any companions should share compatible dietary requirements.

Sexual dimorphism

Differences in growth or outline offer limited guidance. More reliable sexing requires experienced examination of the genital papilla: pointed in a male and rounded in a female.

Breeding

A breeding colony can be developed from around 20–30 juveniles, preferably captive-bred. Subordinate males may suffer during hierarchy formation, so male numbers sometimes need adjustment. Roughly six to ten females per male are suggested. Where several males are kept, give each a separate rock pile and about 60 cm of territory; continuous rockwork often produces one dominant breeder.

Spawning usually takes place over rocks. Eggs are caught by the female as they fall or collected from gaps between stones. She then approaches the male's vent and receives sperm directly into her mouth. Around 5–15 eggs may be incubated for over four weeks, with the female usually continuing to feed.

Moving a brooding fish risks premature release or consumption of the brood. Prolonged isolation can also erase her social position and expose her to attack on return, although remaining in the colony carries a harassment risk. If she must be reintroduced, darken the tank for several hours. Artificial brood removal at about two weeks is for experienced breeders.

At free swimming, fry accept Artemia nauplii, microworms, and powdered prepared food. Those remaining with the female may still seek refuge in her mouth when alarmed.

Notes

More than 50 geographical color forms are known. They interbreed readily and should be maintained separately. Some may eventually be recognized as distinct species, but that possibility is unresolved.
