Overview
An active surface shoaler, Triportheus angulatus uses strong pectoral muscles to leap after flying insects or escape predators. Jumps can cover several meters. Aquarium planning therefore needs to prioritize both a broad swimming surface and a secure cover.
Distribution & habitat
Its range includes Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina. Groups occupy river channels over sandy beds.
Aquarium setup
An aquarium around 120 by 30 by 30 cm is the stated starting size. Surface footprint matters more than extra depth because most activity occurs immediately below the surface. Leave extensive swimming room, add some floating vegetation for reassurance, and keep the water well oxygenated. The cover must account for forceful, long-distance jumps.
Diet & feeding
Natural feeding includes insects, fruit, nuts, and seeds falling onto the water. Live, frozen, and prepared foods are readily accepted in aquaria, but usually only at the surface. Place meals where the group actually feeds rather than expecting it to search lower levels.
Behaviour & compatibility
Maintain a group. Although peaceful, its adult size and energetic swimming can unsettle much smaller or quieter fishes. Suitable South American cichlids, similarly sized characins, and catfishes are more compatible choices when their other needs also match.
