Overview
Trachydoras steindachneri is a small thorny catfish seldom offered in the hobby. Primarily nocturnal and feeding from the bottom, it suits a peaceful community when cover and access to sinking food are provided.
Distribution & habitat
Records cover parts of the Amazon basin in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. Detailed microhabitat information is limited, so requirements of other thorny catfishes should not automatically be assigned to it.
Aquarium setup
A tank around 90 × 38 × 30 cm provides a starting size. Dense planting, caves, wood, and pots create retreats, while subdued light improves security. Still or slow-moving water is preferred, although current alone does not determine suitability.
Diet & feeding
Use foods that reach the bottom. Catfish pellets, algae wafers, and granular products are generally accepted, with regular live and frozen additions. Feed shortly before lights go out so that this mainly nocturnal fish receives its share.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful tetras, barbs, dwarf cichlids, and gouramis are possible companions. Match their water requirements and check that food remains accessible to the catfish.
Notes
Reliable sexual differences and an ordinary aquarium breeding method are unknown. Its infrequent appearance in trade makes careful identification useful; similar-looking thorny catfishes should not supply assumed biological details.
