Overview
A giant freshwater puffer, Tetraodon mbu requires adult-scale accommodation from the outset. Juveniles grow quickly, and a responsive relationship with the keeper says little about safety around other fish. Its eventual size places it beyond most ordinary home aquariums.
Distribution & habitat
It inhabits rivers and lakes in the two Congos, Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi, and Cameroon, including Lake Tanganyika.
Aquarium setup
Adult housing is on the order of 240 by 90 by 90 cm. Smaller tanks are temporary juvenile accommodation only. No salt is needed. Use sand, smooth rocks, and wood while retaining extensive open water. Plants can be added, though feeding from their leaves may leave bite marks.
Diet & feeding
Natural feeding centers on mollusks. Aquarium meals can include suitable shellfish, worms, and live or frozen foods. Regular hard-shelled portions are needed to wear the dental plates; providing enough soft flesh alone does not address continual tooth growth.
Behaviour & compatibility
Solitary housing is strongly favored, and conspecific groups are inappropriate. Individual aggression varies, but the beak can inflict severe or fatal wounds. Any attempt with other fish still carries risk even in a huge aquarium.
Sexual dimorphism
There are no established external differences useful for routine sexing.
Notes
Color can change with condition and surroundings, and behavior differs between individuals. These interactions are interesting, but adult size and the ability to house it should drive the decision to keep one.
