Overview
Taenioides cirratus is an elongated, mud-burrowing coastal goby with greatly reduced eyes and teeth visible outside the mouth. It excavates connected sloping tunnels. A deep, workable substrate is therefore more relevant to its care than an open display designed around active swimming.
Distribution & habitat
Records extend from India, Bangladesh, and the Andamans through Thailand, China including Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia to Japan, New Caledonia, and Papua New Guinea. Coastal mud, especially around estuaries, provides its burrowing habitat.
Aquarium setup
Suggested conditions emphasize mildly brackish water, approximately 1.005–1.015 specific gravity, and a deep soft substrate. Subdued lighting suits a fish that spends much of its time underground. Other decoration is secondary to providing a suitable burrowing environment. It should not be planned for as an ordinary freshwater community fish.
Diet & feeding
Crustaceans and small fishes appear to be its natural prey. Live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped shrimp are plausible aquarium offerings, although acceptance is not established as a certainty.
Behaviour & compatibility
Exclude fishes small enough to be swallowed. Its unusual habitat needs and concealed lifestyle make a dedicated setup a reasonable preference.
Notes
Burrow systems reportedly have several entrances, with a sediment mound outside one opening that may reflect processing of bottom material. Specialized respiratory structures permit air breathing and some survival out of water. This adaptation does not replace the need for appropriate long-term aquatic conditions.
