Moderately sized and peaceful, Synodontis schoutedeni shows variable winding markings that may strengthen with age. Territorial space still matters, and feeding deserves attention because the species appears prone to bloating.
Distribution & habitat
It is known only from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Aquarium setup
A 90 by 30 by 30 cm aquarium is the maintenance reference. Rocks, roots, and wood above soft substrate provide retreats. Subdued light and floating plants suit the layout, with other vegetation optional. Each fish needs its own refuge in a group.
Diet & feeding
General feeding advice for the genus includes live, frozen, prepared, and plant foods. This species’ apparent susceptibility to bloating warrants a more cautious approach to dry food. Its cause is unresolved, so reducing dry-food reliance is a precaution rather than treatment of a proven mechanism.
Behaviour & compatibility
Choose peaceful companions large enough to avoid predation. Boisterous Rift Lake cichlids are poor matches. It is territorial, yet conspecifics can coexist when every individual has a secure retreat.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult females are fuller-bodied. Genital characteristics offer another clue, though the sharp dorsal spine makes casual handling-based inspection inappropriate.
Breeding
In nature, eggs are scattered in seasonally flooded areas rich in microscopic life, without parental care. The availability of juveniles in trade alone does not establish a reliable captive breeding method.
Notes
The winding pattern appears to become stronger with age in well-kept fish. Variation does not automatically indicate another species, and feeding condition deserves as much attention as markings.
