Overview

Large eyes, a broad head, and a wide mouth distinguish the small upside-down swimmer Synodontis contractus. It is gentle and benefits from conspecific company. A group of at least three or four encourages confidence and more frequent appearances.

Distribution & habitat

The species is known from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo. It occupies small ponds, backwaters, and creeks, often occurring in numbers.

Aquarium setup

Use subdued lighting, soft substrate, and retreats among stones, wood, and roots. Broad leaves and floating cover provide favored resting sites. Fresh imports may be delicate, so water quality deserves particular attention during acclimation. Settled fish generally become more robust.

Diet & feeding

Following the broad feeding guidance for squeakers, offer live, frozen, and dry foods with plant items such as shelled peas or cucumber. This species often feeds upside down at the surface; the posture alone is not a sign of illness.

Behaviour & compatibility

One of the gentler squeakers, it can share an aquarium with suitable peaceful African tetras, dwarf cichlids, small mormyrids, and other quiet fishes. Keep at least three or four conspecifics so that a nervous individual is not isolated simply for display.

Sexual dimorphism

Adult females tend to be fuller-bodied. Although the genital papillae differ, the small size makes examination an impractical routine sexing method.

Breeding

Aquarium egg laying has occurred, but the eggs in the reported attempt failed to hatch. This establishes a spawning observation rather than a successful method for producing juveniles.

Notes

Compared with the frequently confused Synodontis nigriventris, this species has larger eyes and a broader head and mouth. Spending much of its time inverted is normal. Surface feeding by itself does not establish a permanently upper-water lifestyle.
