Overview

Synodontis albolineata is a relatively small, generally peaceful squeaker from Gabon. Imports are uncommon, and individuals sometimes appear in mixed shipments. Its modest adult size facilitates community housing, but conspecifics still become territorial when space is restricted.

Distribution & habitat

The species is endemic to Gabon's Majinga drainage, where it occupies several kinds of habitat within the river system.

Aquarium setup

Use a soft bottom with dense plants and retreats among stones, wood, and roots. Floating cover can diffuse the light. Several fish need enough floor space and dispersed shelters rather than a layout that forces every individual toward one prized cavity.

Diet & feeding

General guidance for squeakers describes a broad feeding range. Live, frozen, and dry foods are accepted, with shelled peas, cucumber, and other plant foods available for scraping. Acceptance of prepared food is not a reason to provide an unvarying ration.

Behaviour & compatibility

Most peaceful fishes with compatible requirements can be considered. Suitable African tetras, cichlids, mormyrids, gouramis, and larger barbs are examples rather than an unconditional compatibility list. Conspecifics can share an adequately sized aquarium, but territorial behavior develops in smaller quarters. Provide separate retreats so individuals can avoid persistent contact.

Notes

The mustard-related English trade names and appearance in mixed boxes are useful commercial context, but labels do not replace species identification. Reliable external sex differences are not established, and the small body size makes examination of the genital papilla difficult.
