概述
Synaptolaemus latofasciatus

English
Overview
Synaptolaemus latofasciatus has broad alternating orange or yellow and dark brown or black bands extending across the body and below the lateral line. Snout shape and coloration vary geographically, so one specimen does not represent every population's appearance.
Distribution & habitat
Records span the upper Orinoco, Casiquiare waterway, and middle to lower Amazon region in Venezuela and Brazil. Recorded systems include the Negro, Madeira, Trombetas, Xingu, and Tapajós. Preserve river-of-origin information when comparing forms.
Aquarium setup
Provide at least about 120 × 45 cm of floor space. Plan around the adult fish rather than choosing a small aquarium simply because its striking pattern makes it attractive as an addition.
Diet & feeding
It probably browses algae, invertebrates, and detritus from submerged hard surfaces. Aquarium observations suggest broad food acceptance, but protein-rich menus should be avoided. Do not rely exclusively on rich animal foods.
Notes
Originally placed in Leporinus, it was later recognized through examination of the type specimen as the fish previously called Synaptolaemus cingulatus. The older names remain useful when comparing trade and literature records.
An elongated lower jaw appearing nearly vertical when closed, distinctive tooth proportions, and complete transverse bands aid recognition. Consider mouth structure and provenance together instead of relying on a broad trade label.
