Overview
Reddish males lacking elongated first-dorsal spines characterize Stiphodon surrufus. Small numbers may have entered trade among shipments of other fishes, but “red goby” alone is not an identification. Mature biofilm and dependable oxygenation are the essentials for keeping it.
Distribution & habitat
Originally described from a creek on Leyte in the Philippines, it has also been recorded on Okinawa and Yakushima in Japan. Northward transport of larvae by the Kuroshio Current is a possible explanation rather than a demonstrated account of every population.
It typically occupies higher stream reaches, often beyond waterfalls, with fast narrow runs and riffles interrupted by wider quiet sections. Rocky beds, clear water, and oxygen support rich biofilm, while aquatic plants are relatively sparse.
Aquarium setup
Choose an established aquarium with rounded stones over sand or gravel. Set heavy rocks on the base first so male digging cannot undermine them. Crevices, seasoned wood, and hardy plants provide cover; interrupted sightlines are particularly useful with several males. Bright lighting supports algal growth, while heavily staining new wood reduces illumination.
Maintain filtration, circulation, and aeration. Suggested hourly turnover is approximately 10–15 aquarium volumes, or 5–10 where oxygenation is effective. Change roughly 30–50% of the water weekly, increasing surface movement in warmer conditions. Preserve grazing films and close cover gaps against climbing escapes.
Diet & feeding
Algae and associated microorganisms are the principal food resource. Accepted sinking foods or small amounts of bloodworms are occasional supplements rather than replacements. Grow algae on stones in a separate bright container if the aquarium cannot supply enough. Tough black brush algae is not a dependable food source. Thin fish require accessible food without strong competition.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful fishes of similar size that use higher levels and share its environmental requirements can be suitable. Avoid large species, aggressive feeders, and most territorial bottom-dwelling cichlids. Males defend some space; several need room, cover, and sufficient food. A suggested starting group has one male and at least two females, which tend to associate loosely.
Sexual dimorphism
Males have a red-orange stripe extending behind the pectoral region, with extensive red over the rear body and orange-red at the tail base. Pale females have a dark side stripe ending in a spot, another thinner line above it, and mostly clear fins.
Breeding
Freshwater reproduction is followed by downstream larval movement into the sea and a later return inland. Genus-level observations of courtship and guarding do not establish a complete aquarium method, and developmental schedules from other species are not confirmed for this one.
Notes
Identification combines male color with unextended first-dorsal spines, scale distribution, and fin characters. Bare areas of the body do not mean the entire fish is scaleless.
