Overview

Orange-red males with vertical body bars and blue on the upper lip, cheek, and gill cover make Stiphodon rutilaureus distinctive. This small algal grazer needs mature feeding surfaces, clean water, and reliable oxygenation rather than an aquarium kept bare of all growth.

Distribution & habitat

The range extends from northern Papua New Guinea through the Bismarck and Solomon island groups to Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Fiji. Northern Australian occurrence is possible but poorly documented. Typical sites are higher stream reaches, often above waterfalls, with narrow rapid sections alternating with wider quiet water. Rocky beds support substantial biofilm and usually little submerged vegetation.

Aquarium setup

Arrange rounded stones over sand or gravel. Position heavy rocks on the base first so digging males cannot destabilize them. Provide numerous crevices and broken sightlines, particularly with several males. Bright light supports algae; seasoned wood and hardy attached plants can add shelter and food surfaces without the heavy staining caused by some fresh wood.

Use established filtration with circulation and aeration as needed. Suggested turnover is around 10–15 tank volumes hourly, or 5–10 with strong oxygenation. Replace about 30–50% of the water each week and increase surface movement in warm conditions. Preserve grazing films and secure the lid against climbing escapes.

Diet & feeding

Benthic algae and their associated microorganisms form the main diet. Accepted sinking foods or bloodworms are occasional supplements. If food surfaces become depleted, rotate stones grown with algae in a separate brightly lit container. Softer films are more useful than tough black brush algae. Emaciated individuals need readily available food without dominant competitors.

Behaviour & compatibility

Peaceful, similarly sized stream fishes are potential companions. Avoid large fishes, aggressive feeders, and territorial bottom-dwelling cichlids. Males defend space, especially during breeding, but several can coexist with enough room and food. Females associate loosely; one male with two or more females is a suggested group.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males are orange-red with nine to eleven body bars, dark dorsal saddles, and blue head sides. Red, black, and white fin markings provide further clues. Females are comparatively plain with a dark stripe along a pale body.

Breeding

Adults in the genus reproduce in streams. Larvae drift into marine water and later return upstream after development. Aquarium courtship or egg guarding does not resolve the larval-rearing problem, and timings or tentative longevity from other species are not established for this one.

Notes

Private collectors have obtained this fish, while routine commercial records are limited. Assess male pattern together with structural characters rather than identifying every reddish goby as this species.
