Overview

Stigmatogobius sadanundio, the knight goby, is a familiar member of its genus in the aquarium trade. It accepts varied foods but can swallow smaller tankmates and defend space against its own kind. Companion size and use of different aquarium levels matter more than its modest appearance might suggest.

Distribution & habitat

Records extend from Pakistan and the Indian subcontinent through Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, with Fiji also included. It occurs around estuaries, but freshwater records are more frequent than brackish ones.

Aquarium setup

Provide soft sand and numerous caves or crevices so each fish can retreat and establish space. Subdued lighting can encourage more visible daytime activity.

Successful maintenance has been reported in hard alkaline freshwater. Mildly brackish conditions may also suit it, so salt should not be presented as the only viable approach. Match the whole community to the chosen water conditions and provide sufficient shelter.

Diet & feeding

A range of dry, frozen, and live foods is accepted. Vegetable material is also eaten, including green algae browsed from aquarium surfaces. This feeding flexibility favors a varied ration rather than reliance on algae alone.

Behaviour & compatibility

Exclude fishes small enough to be swallowed. Slow or long-finned species may suffer fin nipping. Medium-sized hardwater or brackish fishes that use higher levels are better candidates than other territorial bottom dwellers. Several knight gobies can be housed together if abundant retreats allow them to avoid one another.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males generally develop a taller dorsal fin. Females tend to be smaller and rounder, often with a more yellowish body color.

Breeding

Captive breeding has occurred, although detailed accounts are limited. Reports describe prolonged courtship followed by eggs attached to a cave roof, potentially numbering around a thousand. The male tends the clutch until hatching, after which care ends. Freshwater addition has been suggested as a possible trigger rather than established as a reliable method.

Notes

This goby can be an engaging component of a carefully selected hardwater or brackish community. Appropriate companion size, separated bottom territories, and compatible environmental needs remain the main constraints.
