A relatively uncommon and peaceful pleco, Squaliforma villarsi can move with surprising speed when startled. Its preference for cooler water and need for unobstructed movement should guide both companion choice and aquarium layout.
Distribution & habitat
It comes from Venezuela, occupying flowing water over sand scattered with stones and frequently using submerged wood.
Aquarium setup
An aquarium around 120 by 30 by 30 cm is the suggested starting size. Use sand, large wood, and smooth rocks under dim light, arranging shelter without crowding the floor. Keep water oxygenated and filtration efficient enough for the substantial waste load. Maintain the cooler conditions specified for the species.
Diet & feeding
Feed varied prepared, live, and frozen foods alongside regular vegetables such as cucumber, zucchini, or spinach. Its feeding becomes less exclusively plant-oriented with growth, so avoid an inflexible all-vegetable menu.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful companions of suitable size can include characins, cyprinids, cichlids, and catfishes. It is notably nonterritorial and can be kept in a species group or with other peaceful loricariids.
