Overview

Sperata aor has a flattened, extended head and an enormous adult size. It swallows fishes that fit into its mouth and defends space against conspecifics. Ordinary home aquariums cannot provide lifelong accommodation.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Both standing and flowing waters are occupied, including lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and rivers.

Aquarium setup

Adult housing is discussed on the scale of roughly 720 × 180 × 360 cm, or 46,656 L. A juvenile grow-out aquarium is not a lifetime plan, especially because well-fed young grow quickly.

Decoration must account for the adult's bulk. Very large pieces of wood and rock can create sheltered areas. A soft sand bottom and subdued illumination are preferable.

Diet & feeding

Pellets, live items, and frozen animal foods are accepted. Large specimens can take whole fresh or frozen fish; there is no requirement that offered fish be alive.

Behaviour & compatibility

Any fish small enough to swallow is at risk. Territoriality toward its own species favors solitary housing outside truly exceptional facilities. Even combinations with other giant fishes require accommodation far beyond a conventional aquarium.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females tend to have a rounder abdomen. Males also possess a long genital papilla before the anal fin.

Breeding

Reports describe specialized skin on the male's abdomen participating in egg incubation and the early care of young. This unusual behavior should retain its reported status. Successful captive reproduction is not considered established, and the account does not provide a practical aquarium breeding method.

Notes

The long, flattened head creates a superficial resemblance to some unrelated South American catfishes. A juvenile may look manageable in a large tank, but eventual size and the infrastructure required over its lifetime remain the decisive limitations.
