Overview
Peaceful and usually retiring, Sinibotia pulchra can nevertheless become an energetic feeder once settled. It often arrives mixed with other Sinibotia, making the combination of body bands, head markings, and fin patterns more useful than a shipment label.
Distribution & habitat
Most records belong to southern China's Pearl drainage, including the Liu and Gui tributaries; the separate Jiulong system in Fujian also has records. Interpretation of the original locality name Li Kiang is uncertain. The broad extent of the Pearl watershed should not be mistaken for confirmed occupation of every part by this species.
It inhabits moderately to slowly flowing reaches of streams and larger river channels. Water is generally clear, with aquatic plants such as tape grasses at some sites. Pollution has affected portions of the Pearl's main channel.
Aquarium setup
Provide a footprint of at least about 120 × 30 cm. Sand or fine gravel, smooth stones, and woody roots or branches should form several retreats. Subdued lighting and shade-tolerant plants add cover. Remove sharp edges, block trapping holes, and secure the lid.
Sinibotia appear to favor stronger flow than many other botiids and can suit larger stream-style tanks. Severe turbulence is unnecessary when oxygen and circulation are adequate. Use a mature, stable aquarium, prevent organic waste buildup, and change roughly 30–50% of the water weekly.
Diet & feeding
This species mainly eats small animals. One examination of wild stomach contents found about 80% chironomid larvae, with mayfly larvae and shrimp making up the rest. A peaceful temperament therefore does not mean shrimp are safe from predation.
Vary live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, chopped shellfish, and earthworms with quality sinking foods. Established fish may feed vigorously and rise into midwater during meals.
Behaviour & compatibility
Outside feeding periods, it often stays in quieter areas or beneath cover. Its peaceful disposition permits many companions that share the same environmental requirements. Peaceful open-water cyprinids are useful candidates; other loaches and catfishes require individual assessment of adult size and husbandry needs.
Group living and apparently complex hierarchies occur in Sinibotia, so keep at least three or four. Solitary individuals may withdraw or attack similarly shaped fishes. With only two or three, a dominant fish can suppress others sufficiently to interrupt feeding.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature females may be fuller-bodied, but dependable external differences have not been confirmed.
Breeding
Aquarium reproduction has not been recorded. Seasonal breeding and possible migration are proposed for wild populations rather than established in detail.
Notes
Approximately 9–15 dark body bars are combined with brown worm-like marks or spots on the head and thin yellow lines around the snout and above the eyes. The tail has three broad oblique dark bands; other fins also carry dark markings near their margins. The flexible body produces characteristic sinuous movements.
Raised spines beneath the eyes in Sinibotia can snag nets or injure hands. Persistent wasting should be investigated without diagnosing a particular infection from appearance alone.
