Overview

Serpenticobitis octozona is a small stream loach with broad dark markings separated by narrow pale bands. It can adhere to upright or overhanging surfaces and shows social interaction with its own kind. Oxygen-rich, clean water and suitable companions are central to successful care.

Distribution & habitat

Known records concern the Sekong drainage in southern Laos, part of the lower Mekong system. The species appears restricted to this region. Shallow, fast headwaters and minor tributaries provide riffles interspersed with pools or occasional cascades.

Sand, gravel, smaller stones, and boulders form the bottom. Bankside plants and patches of fallen leaves are common, whereas aquatic vegetation is usually sparse. Sunlit, oxygenated water supports rich films on submerged surfaces. Heavy rain can temporarily increase turbidity, depth, and flow.

Aquarium setup

Provide at least a 75 by 30 cm footprint. Mixed stones, fine gravel, sand patches, and some wood recreate a useful stream layout. Violent current is unnecessary, but substantial oxygen and worthwhile circulation are important; filtration, pumps, and aeration can be combined as needed.

Prevent organic waste from accumulating. Routine weekly changes of about 30–50% support the clean conditions this running-water fish requires.

Diet & feeding

It is omnivorous, probably taking mainly small insects, worms, crustaceans, and other zooplankton, with less plant material and organic debris. Suitable dry foods are accepted, but daily small live or frozen offerings such as water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms improve dietary variety and condition.

Behaviour & compatibility

Maintain at least four. Conspecific interactions are peaceful, and a group appears beneficial. Open-water cyprinids adapted to similar conditions can encourage this naturally retiring loach to emerge. Compatible stream-dwelling sucker loaches and similar fishes are further possibilities.

Closely resembling loaches are less desirable companions. A combination may work in a larger aquarium, but similarity of size or shape is insufficient grounds for assuming compatibility.

Notes

Identification involves the relative widths of dark bars and pale spaces, and whether markings cross the full flank. This species shows broad dark areas and narrow pale bands. The genus has been assigned to different loach families historically, so older classifications or a general serpent-loach label may require careful interpretation.
