Overview

The Australian Scleropages leichardti has a restricted native range, a silver base color, and spotted scales. Large adult size and pronounced conflict with other arowanas make solitary maintenance the usual practical choice.

Distribution & habitat

It is native to Queensland's Fitzroy River system. Populations in some southern Queensland locations are introduced. Slow or still streams, billabongs, and swamps are typical, often with turbid water and shelter from surface vegetation or overhanging branches.

Aquarium setup

An adult footprint around 180 × 60 cm is only an absolute minimum; larger accommodation is preferable. Decoration is secondary to unobstructed swimming space.

Effective large-scale filtration and regular water changes are necessary to avoid prolonged poor conditions affecting eyes and gills. Fit a heavy secure cover against powerful jumping. Seasonal heat in particular natural sites should not be copied as a constant aquarium target.

Diet & feeding

Heavy reliance on live feeder fish is unnecessary and creates parasite and disease risks. Earthworms, nutritionally conditioned insect larvae, bloodworms, shell-on prawn, mussel, and accepted pellets provide alternatives.

Keep the menu varied. Small juveniles can receive several modest meals daily, while larger fish need less frequent feeding. Clear uneaten food after every meal to protect water quality.

Behaviour & compatibility

Small fishes will be swallowed, and some individuals also reject all large companions. Any community attempt requires robust, appropriately sized tankmates, introduction of the arowana last, and continued observation as it grows.

Most are strongly territorial toward other arowanas. Groups of six to ten may distribute conflict only in truly enormous facilities, and even there success is not guaranteed. This is not a routine home-aquarium strategy; solitary housing is more dependable.

Breeding

Captive reproduction is uncommon, with some farms using spacious outdoor earthen ponds. It is a mouthbrooder. Young remain associated with the parent after hatching, emerging to feed and returning to the mouth when threatened, then gradually spending longer away until independent. Ordinary indoor accommodation rarely offers the scale needed for reliable spawning.

Notes

Spotted scales, forward-pointing barbels, a less sloping head, and unpatterned gill covers help separate it from Scleropages jardinii. Its underlying color is also silver rather than bronze.

Historical confusion involving its name in Indonesia should not be interpreted as evidence of native occurrence there. Check identity and provenance rather than relying only on a broad Australian-arowana label.
