Scleropages inscriptus

Overview

Angular lines across the head and flanks distinguish Scleropages inscriptus from its relatives. This is a large osteoglossid whose permanent accommodation belongs in a public display or an exceptionally large private aquarium. Planning around the size of a purchased juvenile would underestimate its needs.

Distribution & habitat

Myanmar is the reported country of origin. Aquarium-trade specimens are said to originate in the Tenasserim drainage of the southern Tanintharyi region, but the precise range remains uncertain.

The specimens used for the species description were acquired dead from a fish vendor, rather than documented through direct collection. Their stated locality therefore requires caution and does not establish a securely delimited distribution.

Aquarium setup

The principal housing requirement is space on an exceptional scale. A normal home aquarium should not be treated as permanent accommodation merely because a young individual initially fits.

Diet & feeding

A predatory diet of fish and aquatic invertebrates is considered probable in nature. Captive fish are expected to accept nonliving foods. For juveniles, try bloodworms, small earthworms, and minced shrimp. Adults can receive suitable pieces of fish, shellfish, whole shrimp, live river shrimp, and larger earthworms. Pellets may supplement this menu but should not dominate it.

Avoid chicken, beef heart, and other bird or mammal meat. Some of their fats are poorly utilized and may contribute to damaging deposits. Live feeder fish are unnecessary and can introduce disease or parasites; their nutritional quality is also unreliable without appropriate prior conditioning.

Notes

The angular markings extend across the bones around the eyes and gill covers as well as the head sides and flanks. These distinctive lines explain the species epithet, which refers to an inscribed or engraved appearance.
