Scleromystax salmacis

Overview

Sex differences are unusually subtle in Scleromystax salmacis, a small armored catfish from southern Brazilian coastal waters. The strongly extended male dorsal and pectoral fins seen in several relatives are not a dependable sexing rule for this species.

Distribution & habitat

Known records include the Mampituba and Araranguá drainages in Santa Catarina State.

In March 2002, the type locality was a small, clear, slow-moving pool over rock coated with a thin mud layer. Bank grasses, low trees, and bamboo provided cover and shade. A small creek maintained the pool, with periodic flooding linked to a nearby larger stream. An additional habitat account describes an open sandy bank in the Ratones drainage, so the stated range and other locality records require careful reconciliation.

Diet & feeding

Members of Scleromystax are generally foraging omnivores. Sinking prepared foods combined with small live or frozen bloodworms and aquatic worms provide the usual captive-feeding approach.

Feed a varied ration specifically for the catfish. Leftovers from companions are not adequate provision, and the fish cannot replace aquarium cleaning.

Sexual dimorphism

Dorsal and pectoral fin lengths differ little between the sexes, unlike the pronounced male extensions of many congeners. The region around the gill cover is also similar in both sexes, bearing only tiny, scattered odontodes rather than strongly developed male facial structures.

Notes

The closest visual comparison is Scleromystax macropterus. This species lacks that relative's black spot at the base of the central caudal rays and has more irregular transverse body blotches, alongside differences in pectoral ray counts.

Its mythological name alludes to subtle external sex differences, not to hermaphroditism in the fish.

Related armored catfishes have protective body plates and can supplement oxygen uptake through the intestine, accounting for occasional surface gulps. Handle carefully around pectoral spines: punctures can be painful, and mildly toxic secretions near their bases are suspected.
