Overview

The finer divided bars toward the front of Schistura vinciguerrae contrast with broader rear markings, but several relatives look similar. It is less combative than some congeners, yet shelter defense and specialized stream conditions still limit casual community use.

Distribution & habitat

Records cover Myanmar’s Irrawaddy and Salween systems and the Chindwin drainage extending into northeastern India. Yunnan records remain unconfirmed. Forest-shaded streams and small rivers run over coarse sand, gravel, and rocks; one collection came from fast bare-bottomed channels near a waterfall.

Aquarium setup

Provide at least a 90 by 30 cm base for a small group. Sand, gravel, rocks, and branches should create separate cavities and broken sightlines. Hardy attached plants are optional. Maintain high oxygen and useful circulation without requiring extreme current everywhere, and replace around 30–50% weekly.

Diet & feeding

The genus is generally described as omnivorous and weighted toward small animal foods, providing a practical feeding framework. Suitable dried food can accompany daily live or frozen water fleas, brine shrimp, or insect larvae.

Behaviour & compatibility

Avoid slow, long-finned fishes and very placid substrate-dwellers. Compatible open-water stream fishes and selected current-loving loaches are more suitable. Similar-looking loaches require particular caution. A group can work with plentiful shelter, but crowding or poor structure can intensify disputes.

Sexual dimorphism

Females may be fuller-bodied when carrying eggs. Males lack a suborbital flap, a useful comparison with several look-alike species.

Notes

Pattern varies both within and between populations, so bars alone do not guarantee identification. Tail-base markings, tail spotting, and male suborbital anatomy provide additional evidence.
