Overview

Schistura polytaenia has a confirmed record only from its type locality near Tengchong in Yunnan. Trade and aquarium experience are very limited. Historical changes of genus and locality-based identification make accurate origin records particularly useful.

Distribution & habitat

The known site is a tributary of the Irrawaddy system in Tengchong, southwestern China. A wider distribution has not been established.

Aquarium setup

A stream-inspired layout can use sand, fine gravel, varied smooth stones, and branches that create shade and crevices. Hardy attached plants are an option. Good oxygenation and moderate circulation are more relevant than recreating violent torrents.

Sensitivity to accumulated organic waste is considered likely, so clean water and regular weekly partial changes are prudent. These are cautious maintenance suggestions, not an extensively validated breeding or farming procedure.

Diet & feeding

Related loaches primarily consume small animal prey, with minor plant material sometimes arriving through prey stomach contents. Suitable aquarium trials include appropriate dry foods supplemented daily with small live or frozen items such as water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. This reference diet does not establish the full natural diet of the species.

Behaviour & compatibility

Peaceful open-water cyprinids from similar habitats are considered promising companions. Suitable hillstream fishes may also work. Similar-shaped loaches can be territorial or aggressive, so shared appearance is not a reliable compatibility guide.

Sexual dimorphism

Adult females may be slightly larger and heavier-bodied. The presence of male suborbital flaps or specialized pectoral rays is not established for this species and should not be assumed from relatives.

Notes

It was formerly listed in Nemacheilus and later placed in Schistura. Illustrated specimens have been identified largely from collection locality, leaving limits to certainty. Aquarium reproduction is unrecorded.
