背纹南鳅 · Sumo Loach

Overview

Schistura balteata is an uncommon loach whose name is often applied to a similar, apparently undescribed fish. Both appear under the sumo-loach trade label. Body markings and the tail base deserve attention when identifying a purchase.

Distribution & habitat

It originates from the Tanintharyi drainage in southern Myanmar, with records from western Thailand. Clear, cool, oxygen-rich headwaters and flowing streams are typical, often shaded by forest. Gravel, coarse sand, and boulders dominate the bottom. Some sites have steep gradients or cascades; survival in isolated dry-season pools is considered probable rather than established.

Aquarium setup

Build a stream-style layout with varied smooth stones, sand, gravel, and branching wood. Crevices and interrupted sightlines allow individuals to establish separate shelters. Hardy epiphytic plants may be attached to the structure.

Provide high oxygen availability and appreciable circulation without needing extreme torrent conditions. Effective filtration and regular weekly partial changes are essential because accumulated organic pollution is poorly tolerated.

Diet & feeding

The genus is described as consuming mainly small animal prey with lesser plant material and detritus. Use suitably sized dry foods alongside daily small live or frozen foods such as water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Fish may rise quickly to intercept passing food in the flow.

Behaviour & compatibility

Peaceful open-water cyprinids from similar flowing habitats can encourage it to emerge. Suitable robust hillstream loaches are further possibilities. Avoid slow or long-finned fishes and easily harassed bottom dwellers. Similar-shaped loaches are generally inadvisable companions.

A group can coexist in a complex aquarium, but this is not a tightly social species. Each individual commonly occupies its own cave or rock shelter. Feeding disputes occur, and aggression may become severe when space or cover is insufficient.

Sexual dimorphism

Young fish are difficult to sex. Mature males of the genus often show enlarged cheeks and mouthparts, while females may be fuller, especially when carrying eggs. These remain general observational guides.

Notes

True S. balteata has two dark bars below the dorsal fin, paired spots on the upper body ahead of it, and no black tail-base band. Fish labeled Schistura cf. balteata instead may have pink or yellow body bars and a complete dark band at the tail base. Aquarium breeding is unreported.
