Overview
Small size within the pike cichlids does not make Saxatilia proteus a mild community fish. It appears in the trade occasionally and can be particularly hostile toward its own species. Its substantial mouth also puts small tankmates at risk.
Distribution & habitat
Records span Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. Ecuadorian localities include the Napo and Putumayo rivers; Peruvian records extend from the Ucayali to the Pebas, while the Purus supports Brazilian populations. Vegetated shallows form part of its habitat.
Aquarium setup
Use a tank with a minimum length of 120 cm and a sandy floor. Rock caves provide the retreats needed in the layout. The fish may excavate and shift its surroundings, so robust plants are best secured to wood or kept in pots.
Diet & feeding
Build a varied menu around cichlid flakes or pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, and plant-based items including spirulina preparations or algae wafers.
Behaviour & compatibility
Allow for aggression, most notably between conspecifics. Housing with larger cichlids is an option, as is a dedicated setup. Small fish that fit the mouth are at risk of being eaten.
Sexual dimorphism
Males grow larger. Their markings may also be more pronounced than those of females.
